Insanely clean graft!

I've seen GEM avocados popping up at places like Costco and Trader Joes in San Diego recently. They are marketed as Hass but you can tell by the appearance with the gold speckles and the pointy seed that they are actually GEM. The quality is variable when buying them in the store. I recently bought a few GEM trees so that I can grow them in my backyard and have more control over the quality of the fruit. Suptropica in Fallbrook, CA sells GEM trees starting around $30. They offer avocado trees grafted on Zutano seedling or commercial clonal rootstock such as DUSA.

i got new JB in a 5gal pot, how long should i keep it in there before up potting into a 15gal?

My 3 yr old has and 2 yr old Gem got wiped out by hail damage in April and this recent extreme heat finished them off 😢😢😢

I've noticed the same thing, the GEM tolerates heat far better than other varieties. I'm zone 9B here in Fairfield, CA. I live close to the air base and it can also get VERY windy. We do get the delta breeze but that doesn't help during triple digit days. My other avocado trees will droop and burn whereas the GEM doesn't even look phased. I have two GEM in the ground and this year is the first year I'm expecting them to hold a couple dozen avocados. It'll be interesting to see how many, if at all, drop from the inevitable heat wave.

Is Pala Rey Ranch your favorite stand? Any other fruit stand recommendations in the area? Pala, Pechanga, and Harrah's get most of my money but I'll save some for avocados next time I'm in the area 🤣

Did you treat the wood at all before using in your garden? Nice video

If you want more fruit set on avocado trees then try a Boron spray. Don't overuse it though as it takes very little! Spray as the flowers look like cauliflower coming out. I had twice the fruit set on mine this year after I did that.

Gary matsuka from "Garys best gardening mentioned" that spraying sugar water to avacado leaves promotes growth. He also mentioned that spraying sugar water on flowers attracted bees. he mentioned that spraying sugar water promoted photo synthesis. What is your opinion sir? ty

I have 2 avocado trees that have been growing together for about 4-5 years. I want to up-plant it into a larger container. Should I remove one of the trees? I’m no to sure that they are not connected in the root or roots. Do you have any advice? One is much smaller than the other.lthankyou, Marlyn from Ca zone 9b

I live in Brisbane we can't use untreated wood in the garden as white ants eat it out fast. Hardwood that I had in my veggie garden was eaten within 2 years. I had a house built with cypress pine as it is resistant to termites. I sold that house about 18 years ago a fellow came and told me he was looking for a new home as white ants got into in newly built house frames while waiting to stood on the slab. He got paid out and was looking for a new home to start again.

How tall do you think JB will get in first 10 years?

If you plant in a row where the afternoon sun shades a plant behind it will shade it from the late hot sun. I notice this with a Davidson plum I have 2 in different sun positions, 1 in direct sun the other behind a orange tree. The 1 in the sun in the ground for 10 years has always burnt leaves 3 feet high, the other 3 years 8 feet 3 feet wide no burning a great looking tree. I will apply this to new avocado planting.

Couldn't just plant it in the dg. Based on what Gary Matsuoka teaches wouldn't organic material be adverse to the growing condition of avocados?

Can you do an update guide on soil mix snd planting them on heavy clay soil? Live in Menifee so your environment and temp should be the same.

I am in woodcrest. about to plant a reed and gem 15 gallon. Do you use gypsum or calcium when you plant your trees? Also what about the potting mix of decomposed granite, peat moss and pearlite - would you use it in ground? Thanks for the info and good luck!

What kind of root stock are these grafted on to. Are these dwarf or semi dwarf Kona Sharwils?

what are your thoughts on the 5 1 1 mix? would it rot because of the pine bark?

I’ve got a Sir Prize, it’s.about 15 years old, every year it flowers profusely and it yields exactly 1 avocado in the same spot.. it’s a real head scratcher.. I’ve even tried squirting honey water to encourage pollinators. Lately I’ve had thoughts of yanking the whole tree out which I hate to do because it’s pretty good size it’s probably 15 x 8‘ wide….. been thinking about planting a Gwen I don’t have any room so if I took out the Sir Prize, I think I would plant a Gwen.

Will this keep insects away? I'm having trouble with bug eating my tree leaves.

Do you think large particle diatomaceous earth or calcined clay could be substituted for the pumice? I am unable to find pumice in my area.

What happened to the other Gem avocado tree that got burned from the cold temp that you put into a container to try and save?

Where was it purchased ? I bought a tiny one from 4 winds growers. It’s about 3 years old now. No fruit yet. This video makes me sad lol

I would do Hass, Zutano and Mexicola in those conditions. We deal with cold a lot in NorCal.

Modesto Jeff's obviously in Modesto fruits regularly. Perhaps it performs better in some areas than others? The fruit is excellent. But I can understand wanting a regular producer. I have one. I suppose I will see how it works out.
